Meet Steve Drew
Steve Drew is a full-time professional artist and gallery owner of Gallery 119 in Mineola, Texas. After leaving the corporate world more than 15 years ago, Steve picked up paint supplies on a whim and discovered an immediate passion for painting. Though he had always been a doodler, painting was entirely new to him.
Entirely self-taught, Steve quickly found his footing while working as a contractor, steadily building an audience through social media. Over the years, his work has earned multiple awards, sold worldwide, and appeared in galleries. His commission projects range from private collectors to equestrian champions and commercial businesses.
While Steve is widely recognized for his bird paintings, his personal favorites are contemporary interpretations of Western art, created in both charcoal and oils. In January 2024, he relocated to Mineola and opened Gallery 119, a space dedicated exclusively to his own artwork.
The Interview
What inspires your work?
My love for the Western way of life started when I was young, watching old Westerns with my dad. Rodeos quickly became a favorite pastime and still are today. As an adult, I live surrounded by cowboy culture, from owning a farm to having friends across the country who live and breathe that lifestyle.
I’m inspired by the visuals, traditions, and romanticism of the West, along with its nostalgic Americana that brings back memories of childhood.
What do you want people to feel when they see your work?
A range of emotions, from nostalgia and childhood memories to the feelings and lifestyles of modern-day cowboys and cowgirls.
