Loose paper and canvas prints can have a variety of uses. How a print is being finished or displayed can help determine the amount of extra paper or canvas that you might need as a border. The Stackhouse has a variety of border options to help accommodate these needs.
How To Choose the Best Border Option
Loose Paper Prints
You can purchase loose paper prints with three different trim options. These trim options do not affect the size of your image but instead change the amount of extra paper border left around your image. See the infographic below.
Trim to Size (Borderless) – Ideal for when overall size is important, such as framing or packaging. For example, you have 8 by 10 frames that only fit an 8 by 10 print.
Quarter Inch Trim -Ideal for when a little extra paper is needed for handling/presenting. For example, matting and mounting an 8 x 10 is a little easier when there is a quarter inch of paper to handle.
One Inch Trim – Ideal for when paper the paper is being used for part of the print. For example, in a limited edition series some artists will sign, title, and number each print of the edition at the bottom underneath the image to add to the overall presentation of the reproduction.
Loose Canvas Prints
Just like loose paper prints, loose canvas prints also come with several border options. These choices do not affect the size of your printed image; instead, they modify the amount of extra canvas left around your image. Here are the options:
Trim to Size (Borderless) – This is the best choice when the overall size of the canvas print is significant. For instance, if you want to frame the artwork and the frame can only accommodate a specific size of canvas, it’s best to go borderless.
Quarter Inch Trim – This option provides a small border around your image, which is handy when a little extra canvas is needed for handling or mounting the print onto a board or a frame. This makes the process of attaching the canvas easier without affecting the image.
One Inch Trim – This option gives you an ample amount of canvas around your image. This is especially helpful if you want to use the canvas border for enhancing the overall presentation of the artwork. You may want to sign, title, or number each print in a limited edition series at the bottom of the image.
Two Inch Mirror Border – This border option duplicates the last two inches of your image and mirrors it around the edge. This is an ideal option if you are planning to gallery-wrap your canvas print at a later stage. The mirror border ensures the continuity of the image around the edges, enhancing the 3-dimensional effect of a gallery wrap.
Whatever your border needs may be, The Stackhouse can provide the options that best fit your requirements.
